Welcome from our 2009 Secretary-General:
Cardell Johnson - Secretary-General - SRMUN XX
Dear Faculty, Students, and Guests,
Welcome to the 20th session of the Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN). We host a three day Model United Nations conference that is attended by undergraduate college students from across the country. For the past twenty years, SRMUN has worked to provide participants with the opportunity to learn about the United Nations system and important global issues facing the international community today - such as poverty, terrorism, and HIV/AIDS. In addition to learning about the United Nations system and emerging global issues, SRMUN strives to educate its participants on how to conduct in-depth and meaningful research; how to express ideas in formal writing; and how to debate such issues within a diplomatic framework. These skills are valuable and cross many disciplines and career fields. As a former delegate, I can attest that these skills have been instrumental in my academic success, as well as success in my current position as a senior policy analyst with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA).
In the spirit of SRMUN's commitment to providing extraordinary quality and educational advancement, the theme for this year's conference will be Enhancing Global Commitments to Human Rights and Equality. Human rights are essential for achieving the three agreed-upon global priorities of peace, development, and democracy. As such, the United Nations continues to declare human rights as a high priority issue throughout many of its internal bodies and has placed over 45 human rights items on its agenda for discussion in upcoming meetings through 2010.
In addition to the SRMUN XX theme, we are excited to offer some new committees including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Organization of American States (OAS), The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), and the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (General Assembly Fourth) among others. Beyond the great educational experience students will receive in their committees, SRMUN will host an opportunity fair where participants can discuss their career plans with graduate school admission officers and professional staff from various organizations.
If your group has already registered for SRMUN XX, we look forward to welcoming you to Atlanta in November. If you have not registered, we invite you to join us for three days of stimulating debate by following the 'Registration' link to the left of this page. If you have any questions regarding the conference or our website, please contact me at any time. I look forward to working with you all.
Thanks for your interest in SRMUN XX!
